Walter A. McMillan, 66 of Genoa went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Madison, Wisc. VA Hospital, with his family by his side.
Walter was born April 6, 1943, in Sycamore, Ill., to John Vance and Jessie Margaret (Bryan) McMillan. He married Linda (Bennett) Richardson on Feb. 14, 1980, in DeKalb. They resided together in Genoa until his death.
Walt attended and graduated from Sycamore High School in 1962. He went to college and studied law enforcement for one year. He went into the Air Force at Goodfellow base in San Angelo, Tex., from 1962 to 1966, where he met his first wife, Sandra Watson. They had two children together and later divorced. Walt served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Japan as a linguist and military police. He was a very proud veteran all his life. Walt was a devoted Christian, Sunday school teacher and member of the Kings Mansion Church in Kingston.
He worked at Turner Cooper in Sycamore for 17 years, AG Communications in Genoa for five years and at various factories. After he retired in 2005 because of poor health, he continued to work part time as a crossing guard and janitor for the Genoa City Hall and Genoa water works. He loved his job as a crossing guard, because he enjoyed children. He was a Boy Scout leader for 11 years and a Royal Ranger leader in Sycamore at Bethal for 12 years.
Walt is survived by his wife of 29 years, Linda; six children, Michelle (Freddie) McMillan, Patrick (Amy) McMillan all of Tex., Tammy (Ty) Lynch of Genoa, Kermit (Lisa) Bennett of Montgomery, Nick (Melanie) Bennett of Genoa, Justin (Jenny) McMillan of Kirkland; considered as a daughter, Jenny Hayes of Dekalb; 22 grandchildren; six siblings, Velma (Marvin) Singleton of Sycamore, Nora (Arthur) Palm of Nev, David (Vivian) McMillan of Sycamore, Mary Jo Dees of Rockford, Carol Lee (James) Zink of Calif., and Larry (Ellen) McMillan of Dekalb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Virgil and George McMillan and Sarah Jane Skelly.
His Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at the Kings Mansion Church, 200 East St., Kingston, with Pastor Russell Barber officiating. Burial will be at the Genoa Cemetery with full military rites.
Visitation will be on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Slater-Butala Funeral Home of Genoa.
